R2 is the most widely adopted standard for used electronics. On the call of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a broad stakeholder group had developed the R2 Standard (Responsible Recycler Practices Standard) for industries to manage unwanted used electronics items efficiently and protect workers from the hazards associated with electronic equipment.
Responsible Recycling Certification
R2 Responsible Recycling Certification is specific to a facility, and not to a company. The R2 Standard applies to all electronics recycling related activities at a physical address. It may be extended to multiple physical addresses through a multi-site certificate or additional individual certificates. R2 Recycling Certification demonstrates the facility’s commitment and adherence to the Environment, Human health and Safety and encourages recycling, reselling and refurbishing practices and procedures. Currently, following two certification programs are available for R2 Certification: 1. Responsible Recycling Certification: Standard for Electronics Recyclers. 2. E-Stewards Standard: for Responsible Recycling and Reuse of Electronic Equipment.

- Micro level survey for each and every activity of the organization and preparation of detailed Gap Analysis report,
- Preparation of applicable documents required by R2v3 latest standard, based on the detailed study of all organizational activities, such as;
- R2v3 Responsible Recycling Manual,

- Formats to establish the objective evidence of implementation and to ensure control over all the activities.

- Conduct mock drills to address environmental aspects and impacts

- Support during R2v3 onsite adequacy audit and certification audit by certification body.
Six categories of process requirements need to be fulfilled for latest R2v3 certification:
- Downstream recycling chain;
- Data sanitization;
- Test and repair;
- Specialty electronics reuse;
- Materials recovery; and
- Brokering.
Companies will be certified to processes they perform. If a company only performs materials recovery and data sanitization services, then those are the only two type of requirements the company needs to adhere to.
Other basic requirements for R2 Responsible Recycling Certification include but not limited to:
- A well implemented Environmental, Health and Safety Management system based on ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards
- A well implemented Quality management system based on ISO 9001
- Compliance with all applicable environmental, health & safety, data security, and import/export laws.
- Responsible management of electronic materials through the entire recycling process.
- No illegal export of materials, and ensure recycling processes are safe and secure.
- Depending on the recycler’s location and scope of activities and the location of businesses that the recycler transacts.
